Vietnam Confirms Bird Flu IncidentSYDNEY - Dec 22/04 - SNS -- Avian influenza outbreaks have been reported by the Vietnamese government on farms in the southern Mekong Delta. Government officials confirmed roughly 4,000 birds were destroyed on a farm in Can Tho City after birds tested positive for the H5 strain of avian influenza. A 21-day transportation ban has been imposed on the infected area. There were also newspaper reports of smaller outbreaks in Hau Giang and An Giang provinces. The outbreaks are being watched closely by international health authorities, who believe the next flu pandemic in people will come from a mix of avian influenza and a human flu virus. Francois-Xavier Meslin, the World Health Organization's (WHO) co-ordinator for disease control, prevention and eradication, said: "If it happens, which is not yet proven, it's going to be worse than Sars. A full-blown flu virus you can transmit easily to people in your family or people you work with. It's a highly contagious disease compared to Sars." Last season's outbreaks of H5N1 strain of avian influenza ravaged poultry flocks in several Asian countries and killed 32 people in Thailand and Vietnam. However, there was no evidence it acquired the human-flu characteristics needed for the virus to pass easily between people. PageGen v1.0ef
