Seeding Just Underway in SaskatchewanREGINA - Apr 26/05 - SNS -- Plantings this year;'s crops is just underway in Saskatchewan, with about 1% of the crop now in the ground, about the same level as this time last year, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food's weekly crop report. However, a key difference between the two starts to the growing season is soil moisture conditions are better this year. At this time last year, only 40% of the province's crop said their regions had adequate soil moisture reserves. This year they are "generally adequate across the province," the provincial agriculture department said. Areas of surplus moisture are mainly in the northern grainbelt. Areas of short topsoil moisture are mainly in the southeast and east central regions; however, subsoil moisture is generally good in these areas. "While a few individual RMs report up to 35% seeded, many areas have not yet begun seeding due to wet and/or cold field conditions," the provincial agriculture department said. "One per cent of the 2005 crop has been planted. Pulses, wheat, canola, and forages are most commonly reported as seeded so far."
