Western Australia Off to Good Start

SYDNEY - May 25/095 - SNS -- Soil moisture mapping by Western Australia's Department of Agriculture confirms heavy May rains could see an excellent harvest in some areas of the state.

Department climatologist David Stephens said Wheatbelt farmers were the big winners from the big wet, with favorable soil moisture pointing to a bumper season, especially in the north eastern and central south central regions.

"Wheatbelt farmers will be able to take advantage of an early start to the season, with all the advantages that brings," said Dr Stephens.

"Crops can be planted at optimal times which allow plants to grow in a cooler period when water is used more efficiently (compared to hotter finish for later sowing).
