Beware of Charity ScamsSYDNEY - Jul 15/05 - SNS -- People should never respond to anonymous requests for charitable contributions and never click on submission links contained in email messages, warns the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). "Human tragedy is not beyond being exploited by scammers. Emails soliciting bogus donations are a new way for scammers to capitalize on major disasters. This was seen after the tsunami struck at the end of 2004," the ACCC said. "Consumers are advised to be alert when it comes to emails, letters and phone calls asking for donations for victims of the London bombing. "In particular, 'phishing' type emails may find their way into inboxes. These may look as though they come from genuine charity groups and may include logos, photos and other details that try to make them look authentic. However, these emails are looking to steal personal details, in particular, credit card details," the ACCC warns. Its advice to consumers: "Do not make donations by clicking on highlighted text in an unsolicited email. If you wish to make a donation contact the charity directly through their advertised contact details, not those in the email." PageGen v1.0ef
