Manitoba Harvest Winding DownWINNIPEG - Sep 26/05 - SNS -- This year's harvest is starting to wind down in Manitoba, with growers focusing attention on late and long season crops, according to the latest crop progress report from Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives. Commenting on the situation in the southwestern part of the province, the agriculture department said, "Harvest has been nearly completed in the area south of Hwy.##035;1 except for some flax, corn and sunflowers. Flax is approximately 60% harvested, with average to above average yields being reported. Corn silaging has begun and yields have been excellent. The sunflower harvest has not yet started. "In the area north of Hwy.##035; 1, good harvest progress was made in the past week. Cereal grains are 80-85% harvested, canola 75% and flax 35%. Yields of all crops continue to be variable, but many are yielding better than expected. Crop quality has been average to above average." The provincial agriculture department added dry soil conditions in the last month have contributed to a decline in acres planted to fall-seeded crops.
