Vietnam Rice Markets Silent
HANOI - Nov 28/06 - SNS -- Vietnam's rice export markets have shut down completely because of a ban on new sales by the country's government, though exporters remain capable of fulfilling previous sales, notes the U.S. agricultural attache here in an update on the market.
"November 12, the Government suspended rice shipments in line with their policy of limiting exports to reduce domestic prices. Further shipments must be approved by the Prime Minister on a case by case basis possibly through the rest of the calendar year," the U.S. agricultural attache said.
"There are currently several vessels that were berthed at the loading ports when the suspension was announced. According to traders and local news papers, as of November 15, the total rice tonnage awaiting loading was about 200,000 metric tons (MT), of which, more than half is for shipping to Indonesia and Cuba."
