Australian Livestock Auction Action Slip

SYDNEY - Feb 29/08 - SNS -- Livestock sold through online auctions managed by AuctionsPlus Pty Ltd slipped during the past week.

Throughput for the week totalled 39,324 sheep and lambs, versus 37,824 head during the previous week's auctions, and 3,579 head of cattle, compared to 5,523 last week.

"The edge came off throughputs of cattle and sheep this week," AuctionsPlus' Dean Lemmich said. "The stark reality of mutton shortages could clearly be seen in the offering of 105 lots in total for the week, of which only 15 went to slaughterers.

"Consequently mutton prices have been going from strength to strength throughout the week, which is great if you are selling, but the unders and overs system, which operates on the slaughter side, has a cut off point which must become evident in the not too distant future."
