Potato Crops Slip in U.S.
WASHINGTON - Apr 9/08 - SNS -- Spring and winter potato production is down in the United States, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.
Winter potato production for 2008 is estimated at 2.64 million cwt (100 pound units), 4% below the January forecast but 7% above last year. Area harvested in California was 11,000 acres, unchanged from January but down 4% from a year ago. The average yield of 240 cwt per acre is down 10 cwt from January but 25 cwt above 2007. Demand for winter potatoes remained strong as harvest wound down.
Spring potato production for 2008 is forecast at 19.9 million cwt, down 4% from 2007 but 1% above 2006. Area for harvest is forecast at 67,200 acres, down 5% from last year. The average yield is forecast at 297 cwt per acre, 3 cwt above 2007.
