Papaya Output Slips in February

WASHINGTON - Apr 9/08 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya production is estimated at 2.70 million pounds for February 2008, down 6% from January but 34% higher than the comparable month a year ago, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

Total area in crop for February is estimated at 2,040 acres, down slightly from last month but 6% more than February 2007. Harvested area totaled 1,430 acres, up 13% from last month and 23% higher than February 2007. Orchards experienced wet weather in early February.

Wind and water damage weakened older trees, allowing disease to set in. Young orchards coming into maturity more than offset older fields taken out of production. Young plantings made favorable progress as sunny, drier conditions returned toward the end of the month.
