Sharp Drop in Guava Crop
WASHINGTON - May 9/08 - SNS -- Utilized guava production in Hawaii for 2007 is estimated at 1.40 million pounds, 81% lower than utilized production in 2006, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.
Harvested area totaled 85 acres, 280 acres below the area harvested in 2006. Yield (based on utilized production) averaged 16,500 pounds per acre, compared with 20,300 pounds in 2006. The decrease in production and harvested area was due to the closing of a major processing plant in February of 2007.
