U.S. Barley Crop SinksWASHINGTON - Jul 10/09 - SNS -- Barley production in the United States this year is forecast at 203 million bushels, down 15% from 2008, according to the USDA's latest crop report. Based on conditions as of July 1, the average yield for the United States is forecast at 64.7 bushels per acre, up 1.1 bushels from a year ago. Area harvested for grain or seed, at 3.14 million acres, is down 17% from 2008. Record setting yields are expected in Arizona, Utah, and Wyoming, while a record tying yield is expected in Idaho. Persistent wet weather hindered spring seeding in the Pacific Northwest and northern Great Plains and led to delays in crop development throughout the growing season. By June 28, heading of the Nation's crop was 25 percentage points behind the 5-year average pace, with the biggest lags evident in Minnesota and North Dakota, where heading had not yet begun and was 37 points behind the 5-year average. On June 28, 82% of this year's crop was rated in good to excellent condition, compared with 71% a year ago. Subscribers can read the full text of the article by Clicking here PageGen v1.0ef
