U.S. Broiler Hatchery Down on YearWASHINGTON - Nov 12/09 - SNS -- Broiler hatchery activity in the United States Broiler was down from last year for the seven days closing November 7, 2009, but managed a mixed performance on the week, according to the current USDA report on the sector. Commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 189.0 million eggs in incubators during the week. This was down 2.1% from the eggs set the same week last year. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84%. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier. Broiler growers placed 153.0 million chicks for meat production. Placements were down 1.3% from the comparable week a year earlier.
