Indian Seeding Kharif CropsNEW DELHI - May 11/04 - SNS -- Seeding of the summer or kharif season crops is underway for most crops in many parts of India. Crops now going in the ground include cotton, wheat, coarse cereals, sugarcane, jute and pulses. In its latest crop progress report, India's agriculture ministry sai normal area under Kharif coarse cereals is about 23.1 million hectares. Sowing of jowar has started in Karnataka where 15,000 hectares has been sown as compared to 9,000 hectares during the corresponding period of the previous year. Normal area under cotton is about 8.8 million hectares. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh are major cotton producing States with respective normal area of 3.15 million; 1.64 million; 1.05 million; 570,000; 530,000; 520,000; 580,000; and 510,000 hectares. Sowing of cotton has started in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Area reported so far is 250,000 hectares against 220,000 hectares covered last year in the corresponding period. Normal area under sugar cane is about 43 0,000 hectares. Attar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are major sugarcane producing States with respective normal areas of 1.95 million; 590,000; 400,000; 320,000; and 220,000 hectares.
